Bonanza King Formation

Sample of Bonanza King formation, Death Valley
< Previous - Next >

1,000 foot thick. Another chemically precipitated dolomite formed in a marine setting. The dark rock is carbonate, while the white material is fecal matter from worms. 500 million years old.

Phanerzoic eon > Paleozoic era > Cambrian period > Furongian epoch > Paibian age

Fossil Notes
The only fossiliferous bed is shale below limestone member neat middle of formation. This shale contains linguloid brachiopods and trilobite trash beds with fragments of Ehmaniella.

Bonanza King Formation Death Valley Region

The Bonanza King Formation is a significant geological unit within the Death Valley region of California. Known for its diverse rock types and important paleontological content, it plays a key role in understanding the geologic and biologic history of this area.

Characteristics and Composition

The Bonanza King Formation primarily consists of:

Limestone and Dolomite:

These carbonate rocks suggest a marine origin, indicating that the area was once a shallow sea.

Shale:

Interspersed with the carbonates, the presence of shale layers points to quieter periods of sedimentation under less energetic conditions.

Geological Significance

Age:

The Bonanza King Formation is dated to the Middle Cambrian period, approximately 513 to 501 million years ago. This period is crucial for studying early marine ecosystems and the Cambrian explosion, a time of rapid diversification in marine life.

Paleoenvironment:

The formation's lithology indicates a predominantly shallow marine environment conducive to the deposition of carbonates and fine sediments. The variations in rock type reflect changes in sea level and depositional environments over time.

Fossils:

The Bonanza King Formation is particularly noted for its fossil content, which includes a variety of early marine organisms such as trilobites, brachiopods, and other invertebrates. These fossils are crucial for understanding the evolution and distribution of Cambrian marine communities.

Research and Relevance

The study of the Bonanza King Formation helps geologists and paleontologists piece together the complex puzzle of Cambrian geology and paleobiology. Its carbonate and shale sequences offer insights into the environmental dynamics and biological diversity of the time. Understanding these ancient marine environments provides a broader perspective on Earth's climatic and biological evolution during the early part of the Paleozoic Era.
