Broadway Street 1897

Broadway Street in Randsburg 1897

Broadway Avenue was the third leg of the triangle that formed downtown Randsburg in 1896 and 1897. This side of the street was not touched in the disastrous fire of January 1898, but was completely wiped out by the May and November 1898 fires. Very little rebuilding took place after the 1898 fire and the lots remain empty to this date. The large white building to the left housed the Steam Bakery in part of the 1890s, the tent assumed to be the building identified in descriptions of the fire as the Broadway Hotel, the next building down the street is the New York Hotel, and unidentified building, and the next large building on the street was Shorty Oakley's Mining Bureau which housed the Randsburg Assay Office and the offices of Shepherd, Wheeler and Rhodes, U. S. Deputy Mineral Surveys. Civil and Mining Engineers.
