Rand Development Company Selling Mining Property and Lots for Businesses and Homes - 1897

Rand Development Company Selling Mining Property and Lots for Businesses and Homes.

This image is taken so early in the camp's history that signs for the various business establishments are clearly hastily done. It is reported in the January 17, 1897 edition of The San Francisco Call that "Major E. F. Bean of the Randsburg Development Company is one of the most active men in the camp in buying and selling mining properties, and represents a great deal of capital seeking investment. The Major has been rustling in the camp from its start and has been handling some big propositions." Mr. Griswold was known to be in town as early as 1896 as it was reported in The Los Angeles Daily Times, February 2, 1897, that Mr. Griswold's term as chairman of the Citizens Committee had expired and an election among members was held to replace him. A stock certificate exists for the Rand Development Company. It was incorporated in 1900. The buildings directly to the right of the Rand Development Company still exists as Chili Pole building and the Rand Barber Shop.
