Joshua Tree National Park Nature Trail
Bajada Nature Trail
Life on a Colorado Desert BajadaThe Bajada Nature Trail is a short, accessible loop located in the southern portion of Joshua Tree National Park near Cottonwood, within the lower Colorado Desert environment. Unlike the higher Mojave Desert sections of the park, this area is hotter, drier, and dominated by creosote bush scrub and widely spaced desert vegetation.A bajada is a broad, gently sloping landform created where multiple alluvial fans merge at the base of a mountain range. Over long periods, water flowing out of canyons spreads sediment across the desert floor, forming this continuous slope. The Bajada Trail provides a clear example of this landscape, where geology and water movement shape plant distribution. Vegetation here reflects the harsher conditions of the Colorado Desert. Creosote bush dominates the landscape, spaced evenly to reduce competition for scarce moisture. Other plants such as ocotillo, cholla cactus, and desert shrubs appear in patterns influenced by soil depth, runoff, and exposure. The trail is designed as an introduction to desert ecology at its most extreme. Interpretive signs explain plant spacing, water movement, soil conditions, and survival strategies in an environment where rainfall is limited and unpredictable. Compared to the Mojave-focused trails like Cap Rock or Hidden Valley, the Bajada Trail shows a simpler but more severe system, where fewer species survive and each must be highly adapted to heat and drought. next page |
