Brittlebush
Brittlebush is a useful indicator of changing water conditions in the desert. During wetter periods, its leaves are larger and greener, showing that moisture is more readily available. As temperatures rise and the soil becomes drier, the leaves turn gray and brittle, helping the plant endure harsher conditions. Dense white hairs on the leaves reflect sunlight and reduce water loss, an important adaptation in the heat of the bajada.
This hardy desert shrub also contributes to the larger desert community. It provides seasonal food for bighorn sheep, especially during the cooler months when other forage may be limited. In this way, brittlebush is not only well suited to life in an arid environment but also serves as a visible sign of desert moisture conditions and as an important source of support for desert wildlife.
