Mount PotosiMt. Potosi is a mountain located in Clark County, Nevada, USA. It is part of the Spring Mountains and is situated to the southwest of Las Vegas. The elevation of Mt. Potosi is approximately 8,514 feet (2,595 meters) above sea level. The area around Mt. Potosi has historical significance, with mining activities taking place in the past. The mountain is named after a prospector named Don Vicente de Potosi, who was active in the area during the mid-19th century. In recent years, Mt. Potosi and the surrounding region have become popular for outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing. Carol Lombard plane crash Mt. Potosi, Goodsprings, NevadaThe tragic plane crash involving actress Carole Lombard occurred on January 16, 1942. However, the crash did not take place on Mt. Potosi but on nearby Mount Potosi's sister peak, Mount Potosi's west peak, located in the Spring Mountains of Nevada.Carole Lombard, along with her mother Elizabeth Peters and 20 other passengers, was flying back to California from a war bond tour. The aircraft, a DC-3, crashed into the side of Mount Potosi due to severe weather conditions, including high winds and low visibility. There were no survivors. The crash site is relatively remote and inaccessible, and wreckage remains on the mountainside to this day. The site is considered a memorial, and people occasionally hike to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic event. The crash site is not far from Goodsprings, Nevada, which is a small town located in Clark County. |
