Kelso Depot

Train on tracks

Kelso was a helper station, a necessary stop on the line due to the steep grade just to the north. Trains idled in Kelso while having helper engines attached to enable them to make it over the steep Cima grade. Additionally, in the arid desert setting dependable water source needed for railroad operations was not far away in the underground springs of the Providence Mountains.
