Ranching History in the Mojave Preserve

Ranching in the Mojave National Preserve began over 150 years ago with early travelers grazing livestock as they crossed the desert. As miners and railroad workers moved into the area, ranchers like George Briggs and LeRoy Blackburn established large cattle operations. By 1894, they formed the Rock Springs Land & Cattle Company, controlling vast lands around crucial water sources.

Ranching faced challenges, especially during a severe drought in the late 1920s, which forced many changes. The Taylor Grazing Act of 1934 required ranchers to fence their land and pay fees for grazing on public lands, leading to the sale or breakup of some ranches.

Despite these obstacles, ranching continued and significantly impacted the Mojave's landscape. Cattle grazing may have even contributed to the growth of Joshua tree forests by creating favorable conditions for young trees. This shows how human activities have shaped the desert environment over time.
