Different types of wild flowers can be seen at various times throughout
the year in the Mojave Preserve. Different types of wildflowers can be seen throughout the year in the Mojave National Preserve. Bloom times and species vary depending on rainfall, elevation, and local conditions. Early Spring (February–April):In lower elevations like Kelso Dunes (322Ai), you might see desert sand verbena, brown-eyed evening primrose, and dune primrose carpeting sandy flats after winter rains.Mid to Late Spring (March–May):As the season warms, mid-elevation areas like Cima Dome (322Aj) and the Mid Hills (322Ak) begin to bloom with Mojave asters, desert marigold, beavertail cactus, and Fremont’s phacelia.Early Summer (May–June):In higher elevations like the New York Mountains (322Al), cooler temperatures support later blooms such as penstemons, paintbrush, and lupine.Monsoon Season (July–September):Summer rains can trigger a second, shorter bloom—especially in washes and rocky canyons—with flowers like chinchweed and devil’s claw.Even in dry years, hardy perennials and desert shrubs still offer color. These blooms are not only beautiful but also support pollinators, birds, and other desert wildlife. |
