Roads & Trails in the Mojave Desert Freeways & Highways Highway 136California State Route 136 (CA 136) is a relatively short but scenic highway that connects the towns of Lone Pine and Keeler in the eastern Sierra Nevada region of California. This route runs for about 18 miles and offers travelers some stunning views of the Owens Valley, the Inyo Mountains, and the distant Sierra Nevada peaks.Starting in Lone Pine, CA 136 branches off from U.S. Route 395 and heads eastward toward Keeler, a small historic mining town on the eastern shore of the dry Owens Lake. The road closely follows the western edge of Owens Lake, which was once a large body of water but was mostly drained in the early 20th century due to water diversion to Los Angeles. CA 136 also serves as a key connector to CA 190, which leads toward Death Valley National Park, making it a useful route for travelers heading to or from the park. Along the way, you can see remnants of old mining operations and some salt flats that highlight the area's industrial history. Keeler itself, at the eastern end of the highway, is a quiet and somewhat isolated place with a history tied to silver mining and the operations of the Carson and Colorado Railway, which once ran through the area. Today, it's more of a historical curiosity than a bustling town, but it remains an interesting stop for those fascinated by the history of the region. Owens ValleyLone PineKeelerSwansea |
