Dry Lakes -
Lucerne Valley & Vicinity
Rabbit Lake(normally dry)Elevation: 896m / 2940feet Rabbit Lake is a relatively small, flat dry lake that is excellent for flying ultralights and RC model aircraft enthusiasts. This is a very scenic spot in the valley as the mountains and hills north and south are close and with snow-covered views to the south in the winter. Rabbit Dry Lake in Lucerne Valley, California, is indeed a dry lakebed in the heart of the Mojave Desert, generally featuring a broad expanse of flatness. Its hard surface, cracked in many places, affords the best access for off-road vehicles, dirt biking, and other such outdoor activities entailing high speeds and recreation. In those few instances when rain does fall, the lake may partially fill with water, only to drain away and revert to its normal dry and dusty condition. |
Throughout history, dry lakebeds such as Rabbit Dry Lake have played an essential role in the route of desert travelers, as it serves as a natural milestone across the desolate landscape. Today, it's a favorite spot for photography and film shoots-the open space and classic desert feel prove quite irresistible. The lakebed itself is ringed by low desert plants and gives distant views of the mountains surrounding Lucerne Valley, providing a sharp contrast in scenery.
