Joshua Tree National Park - Oasis of Mara

Water at the Oasis


United States surveyors first visited and recorded this area in 1855 and 1856. They found marsh plants surrounding several ponds and water flowing out into the desert 1/2-mile to the north. Water was so plentiful that the Serrano Indians were diverting it to cultivate corn, beans, squash, and melons.
