Fault Action


Fault action below the oasis has ground rocks to form an impermeable clay layer. Water from nearby mountains seeps underground until it hits the clay, then rises toward the surface. When the amount of water diverted to the surface is sufficient, springs form and create standing pools of water. The plentiful water supports the plants and animals characteristic of oases.
