The Ancestral Mojave River - West Fork

Miller Creek

Miller Creek is a minor tributary within the upper watershed of the Mojave River system, contributing runoff from the western San Bernardino Mountains to the West Fork.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING

Miller Creek originates in the western portion of the San Bernardino Mountains, where precipitation and snowmelt generate seasonal flow. It is part of a network of small streams that drain the mountain slopes and converge into larger channels.

The creek flows toward Summit Valley, where its waters contribute to the developing West Fork of the Mojave River.

HYDROLOGIC FUNCTION

Miller Creek functions as a collection channel for localized runoff, carrying water from higher elevations into the broader headwater system. Flow is typically seasonal, responding to winter storms and spring snowmelt.

Although small in scale compared to major tributaries, its contribution adds to the cumulative discharge that forms the West Fork.

SYSTEM ROLE

As part of the western tributary network, Miller Creek helps feed the West Fork, which in turn joins Deep Creek to form the Mojave River. It represents one component of the distributed drainage system that gathers water from the San Bernardino Mountains.

SIGNIFICANCE

Miller Creek illustrates the importance of smaller tributaries in building the Mojave River system. While individually modest, such streams collectively supply the majority of the water that sustains the river, highlighting the role of the mountain watershed in desert hydrology.
