Mines & Mills - El Paso Mountains

Holly Ash Mine & Camp

The Holly Ash Mine was in operation from 1939 to 1958 producing pumice for a variety of uses, but mainly for Holly Cleanser. About 25,000 tons of material were mined.

The largest quarrying operation, and the only one now (1952) active, is at Holly Camp on the property of Calsilco Corporation which owns nine claims in sec. 33, T. 28 S., R. 38 E. and sec. 4, T. 29 S., R. 38 E. The ash here is 20 feet thick, dips about 20° W., and is very compact. It is being quarried by steam shovel in a large open cut, and processed at the plant which consists of a hammer mill, a bunker, a screen, cyclone collectors and a packing machine. The ash is pulverized and sifted through assorted meshes, and made into insulation for ceilings, acoustical plaster, soil conditioner, Holly cleanser, wood filler, paint, and abrasives in tooth powder.
