Garlock Ghost TownGarlock 1898 (colorized) In the fall of 1895, Eugene Garlock hauled an eight stamp mill, the first in this area, down from Tehachapi. This was located at Cow Wells due to the water supply and it's centralized location for various mining districts. Garlock is a ghost town located in the Mojave Desert in Kern County, California, USA. It is situated near the Rand Mountains and Red Rock Canyon State Park. The town was originally established in 1896 following the discovery of gold and silver in the area. At its peak, Garlock was a bustling mining town with a school, post office, saloons, and other amenities. However, like many mining towns of the era, Garlock experienced a decline in population and economic activity as the mining boom waned. Today, Garlock is considered a ghost town, and many of its original structures have deteriorated or disappeared. Visitors to the area can still find remnants of the town's past, including abandoned buildings, mine shafts, and other artifacts. Exploring ghost towns like Garlock can provide a glimpse into the region's history and the challenges faced by those who sought their fortunes in the desert during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Keep in mind that when visiting such sites, it's important to respect any posted signs and exercise caution, as old structures may be unstable. Garlock FaultKern CountyKern County Mining |
