Gold Mines & Mills: Joshua Tree National Park
Winona MillGeorge Hulsey established this mill in 1924.The foundations of the ruins dot the hillside along the canyon. Cottonwoods and exotic trees shade the sandy wash below. These trees were probably initially planted to provide shade in the sparse, generally shrubby environment. The Winona Mill in Joshua Tree National Park is a historic site that provides insight into the mining heritage of this area. Not as renowned as other mining spots within the park, the Winona Mill was nevertheless part of the late 19th- and early 20th-century boom when miners flocked to this area with a common dream of getting gold. Like many of the mills at that period, this one was constructed to process ore from nearby mines that had to be crushed, separated, and then refined to get the precious metals. - The Winona Mill went on to join the ranks of many abandoned mills, as mining ventures turned out to be moderately successful and operations were hard to sustain with such a remote and harsh desert environment. Today, remnants of mills like Winona give us a hint of the ingenuity and hardships that miners endured; and the remains of this mill are scattered among beautiful landscapes around Joshua Tree. - - |
