Shoshone/Tecopa Area
Grimshaw Riparian AreaInyo County, California's Grimshaw Lake is located near Tecopa in the Mojave Desert. A hot spring-fed stream flowing out of the Tecopa Mountains created the lake, which is named after Edwin Lewis Grimshaw. After a previous marriage (to Frank A McQueary) and several children, Edwin married Minnie (Bacon) McQueary. The couple married in Los Angeles in 1936, and moved to Tecopa in 1944, where Ed leased a trading post and bar. The lake was created by Ed as a means of attracting ducks for hunting. The couple lived the rest of their lives in Tecopa and are buried there. No children were born to them. The Grimshaw Lake Watchable Wildlife Trail is a gravel trail following an easy, flat route along the abandoned railroad bed of the historic Tonopah and Tidewater ("T&T") Railroad, built around the turn of the 20th century. Wildlife flourishes, particularly bird species as the trail passes through the open Tecopa Basin. Grimshaw Lake is part of the Amargosa River Natural Area, administered by the Bureau of Land Management. |
