Skull Rock Trail
A Desert Pine TreeProbably the best known desert nut is produced by the Pinyon Pine (Pinus monophylla). The chunky little cones yield nuts which ripen in September. When the nuts are ready, flocks of Merriam chipmunks and Pinyon jays gather on the trees. Wood rats may stash as many as 30 pounds in their nest to last through the winter. next > < previous |
