Geology: Rocks, Minerals, Crystals & Ores Metamorphic Rocks and Minerals
When rocks undergo extreme changes in temperature and pressure, their internal crystal structure and composition adjust to form new, stable minerals. New elements are not introduced to this metamorphic system. Many metamorphic minerals are mixtures of calcium (Ca), aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and silicon (SiO2). Metals such as iron and titanium bond with oxygen to form magnetite, pyrite, and rutile. Benotite, a rare, blue, barium-titanium silicate mineral fond in hydrothermally altered serpentinite, is California's state gemstone.
