Metamorphic Rocks and Minerals

Rutile is a titanium oxide mineral (TiO2) prized for its brilliant luster, high refractive index, and rich reddish-brown color in thin sections. It is the most abundant natural form of titanium dioxide and can occur in metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary environments. At the Champion Mine in Chalfant, Mono County, California, rutile occurs in fine crystalline forms, sometimes containing trace elements like iron, niobium, and tantalum, enhancing its scientific and industrial value.
