Buckhorn CamproundBuckhorn is an overnight campground with 38 tent and RV spaces at an elevation of 6,300'. The parking lot for the Burkhart Trail is on a spur off the main campground road, 0.7 miles and 4 minutes from the Crest Highway.Buckhorn is named for a pair of gigantic horns once nailed to a tree there when it was a hunting camp. Buckhorn is part of the Mojave River Basin. Access Map: Mt. Islip Area (BHC marks the location, in the lower left of the map) See also: USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Waterman Mountain (34° 20' 42" N, 117° 54' 53" W) By Car: From Interstate 210, go northeast on Angeles Crest Highway, State Route 2, 34.2 miles. The turnoff to Buckhorn is at mile 58.25, 24.6 miles east of the junction of the Angeles Crest and Forest Highways (~39 minutes driving time), and 30.5 miles west of the Big Pines Highway (~46 minutes). The last mile marker before Buckhorn is 58.19 from La Canada, and 58.33 from Big Pines, so be ready to turn after you see those markers. There is no sign for the Campground when approaching from Big Pines. Forest Adventure Pass needed for Burkhart Trail parking area; otherwise the $12 campground fee is sufficient. By Trail: East or west from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and north from the Burkhart Trail which is a section of the High Desert National Recreation Trail.
