Big Pines Recreation Area
Ski SunrisePhotos - 1997- - - - |
The Ski Sunrise Resort was once situated in the Big Pines area of the Angeles National Forest, particularly on Table Mountain near Wrightwood, California. It was a small ski resort that appealed to most skiers and snowboarders who were not willing to go through hustle and bustle, which characterizes most large ski resorts around. Ski Sunrise offered scenic views of the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains and was part of the historic Big Pines Recreation Area, developed during the 1920s as a year-round haunt for sportsmen of various persuasions. Big Pines was also an early crucial center for skiing and winter sports in Southern California. The area became known during the early 20th century for recreation, with early ski jumps, cabins, and other facilities serving visitors. Table Mountain provided especially good skiing, and places like Ski Sunrise took advantage of the natural beauty and winter conditions of the area. While Ski Sunrise was in that general area, the better-known resort Mountain High has expanded over the years to become one of the most popular skiing destinations in Southern California. Featuring expansive runs, terrain parks, and night skiing, Mountain High is far from the more diminutive version presented by Ski Sunrise-which has long since been closed. Ski Sunrise is evocative of the early days of skiing in the Angeles National Forest and its importance in shaping Southern California's skiing culture. |
