Paperbag Bush

(Salazaria Mexicana)
click the photo to continue

Much of the year, it is easy to identify this shrub by the paperbag-like seedpods dangling from its brittle branches. Antelope ground squirrels sometimes climb in the branches, collect seeds in their cheek pouches, and store them in burrows for later eating. Desert winds easily scatter the brown inflated seedpods.
