Park Features

The Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada does not have modern cabins for rent, but it has historic stone cabins constructed by the CCC back in the 1930s. These served as wayside cabins, or shelters, for travelers and have been preserved today as a part of the park's historic landmark. Native sandstone went into their construction, helping them merge into the surrounding red rock landscape, a must-see sight for anyone who visits the park.

You cannot stay in these stone cabins today, but the park provides various camping options-most excitingly, sites with a spectacular view of the red rock formations. If you need to stay somewhere close, you'll find places to stay in the surrounding towns of Overton or Mesquite, or even Las Vegas-one hour's drive from the park.

Civilian Conservation Corps

The CCC, or Civilian Conservation Corps, was a program created in the 1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Established in 1933, it aimed to combat the widespread unemployment caused by the Great Depression. The program provided jobs for young men (ages 18-25) to work on environmental projects, such as planting trees, building parks, fighting soil erosion, and improving national and state parks.

The CCC not only helped the environment but also gave many unemployed individuals work, housing, food, and a small wage. It was one of the most popular and successful New Deal programs, helping shape many of the public lands we enjoy today, while also boosting the morale of young Americans during a tough time.
