Shoshone Cemetery

Shoshone cemetery photo gallery

Four-year-old Ralph Modine, who died tragically in 1924, was the first person known to be buried here. Since that time it has become the final resting place for over 50 people, many in unmarked graves.

Shoshone Cemetery, located just outside the small town of Shoshone, California, is a quiet, historic burial ground in the heart of the Mojave Desert. It sits on a low, rocky hill overlooking the Amargosa River valley, blending into the stark but beautiful desert landscape.

The cemetery reflects the area's history, with graves dating back to the early 1900s. Many of those buried here were miners, settlers, and travelers who passed through or lived in this remote region. The headstones range from simple wooden crosses to more elaborate markers, some weathered by time and the harsh desert elements.

Shoshone itself has long been a gateway to Death Valley, and the cemetery is a reminder of the challenges faced by those who carved out a living in this rugged environment. Some of the graves are unmarked or have only faint inscriptions, adding to the air of mystery and history that surrounds the site.

Though small, Shoshone Cemetery holds a sense of solitude and timelessness. It's a place where visitors can pause, take in the desert silence, and reflect on the lives of those who once called this isolated stretch of the Mojave home.
