Lava - Mojave Preserve
Lava Arch![]() Aiken Arch: A Hidden Volcanic Gem in the Mojave Aiken Arch is a striking natural basalt formation tucked away in the Mojave National Preserve in San Bernardino County, California. Spanning about eight feet in width, this rugged arch is part of the Cinder Cones National Natural Landmark, a landscape shaped by volcanic activity over millions of years. Beneath the arch, you'll find remnants of ancient pictographs in red, black, and white. Though time and weather have faded these markings, they remain an important cultural link to the past. The surrounding Aiken's Wash area holds significant archaeological value, with multiple pictograph and petroglyph sites dating back to the late pre-Columbian period. Evidence of past habitation has also been found, adding to the region's historical depth. Beyond archaeology, the area boasts a striking volcanic landscape, featuring extinct cinder cones and ancient lava flows. Most visitors reach Aiken Arch via Aiken Mine Road, which cuts through the cinder cone field of the Mojave National Preserve. However, this is no paved highway-it's an unmaintained route where a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. In sections with deep sand and sharp rocks, four-wheel drive is highly advised. If you venture out to see Aiken Arch, be sure to respect and protect its cultural and natural resources. Avoid touching or defacing the rock art, and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the site for future visitors. After all, places like this are best enjoyed as they are-wild, untouched, and full of history. |
