Mineral Sequence in the Cady Mountains

In the volcanic rock cavities of the Cady Mountains, a special form of calcite takes shape—scalenohedral twins. These intergrown crystals, often referred to as "dogtooth spar," form long, pointed structures that mirror each other in symmetrical perfection. Twinning occurs when two crystals share part of their internal structure, creating a unified, often dramatic form. In this case, the calcite crystals grew in vesicles left behind by ancient lava flows, slowly crystallizing as calcium-rich water seeped through the rock. The result is a visually striking specimen that captures the quiet artistry of geologic time. Slight variations in color, clarity, or shape add to each twin’s uniqueness. Whether appreciated for its geometry, beauty, or scientific significance, the calcite scalenohedron twin stands out as a natural sculpture—formed not by hand, but by pressure, chemistry, and time beneath the Mojave Desert.
