Desert Springs: Owens Valley

Dirty Sock Springs

At the southern end of Owens dry lake, north east of Olancha dunes is Dirty Sock Springs. The actual origin of the name is lost forever. There are several weak theories, but once you have spent a little time there you will find the name is quite appropriate. The water is about 90 degrees Fahrenheit year around and emits a very strong sulpher odor- very similar to dirty socks.

Some claim the water and mud from the springs is beneficial to those suffering from arthritis and skin ailments.
