Communities - Route 66

Danby, California

Danby 2001

A station established by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1883. A post office was established here in 1893 and served as the mail drop for mines in the Old Woman Mountains until it was closed in 1913. Now Danby is just a name in the desert.

Danby, California, is a small location along the iconic Route 66, also recognized as the National Old Trails Road. Imagine this: in the past, during extended road journeys across the nation, Danby was a pit stop for travelers. Situated in the Mojave Desert, it is essentially a large, arid region with abundant space.

Danby served as a small resting point on the lengthy journey along Route 66, which was among the earliest major highways enabling travel from the East Coast to the West Coast. Individuals would pause at this location to refuel their vehicles, perhaps purchase some food, or simply relax briefly before continuing their journey.

Currently, Danby is no longer. It is a deserted town with a few old buildings and slight remnants of the original road, serving as a reminder of the early days of road trips. Despite its current lack of activity, Danby remains an interesting piece of the past, offering a look into a time when road trips were more about the journey itself rather than reaching a destination.
