Cajon Pass: Route 66 - Map

Cozy Dell

Photo of Cozy (Cosy) Dell

Cosy Dell was a small community in the Cajon Pass, located in Southern California. It was established in the late 19th century and served as a small stopover or settlement area for travelers passing through the Cajon Pass, which has been an important transportation route for centuries, connecting the Los Angeles Basin with the Mojave Desert.

The Cajon Pass itself is a natural gap between the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains and has been used by Native American tribes, explorers, and later, settlers and railroad builders. Cosy Dell was one of several small communities that sprang up in the area to serve the needs of travelers and those working on the railroad or in nearby mines.

While Cosy Dell was never a large or particularly significant town, it contributed to the development of the region by providing a place for people to rest and resupply as they traveled through the rugged terrain of the pass. Today, Cosy Dell is mostly a memory, with little left to mark its existence, but its role in the history of the Cajon Pass is a reminder of how important these small settlements were in supporting the expansion and development of the American West.

Originally called the Bear Flat Ranch, Cosy Dell was sold in 1872 becoming the toll gate for the Brown Toll Road, way station and stage stop in 1878. Cosy Dell became popular and remained so on into 1898 when the ranch was lost to back taxes being owed.
