Joshua Tree National Park - Oasis of Mara

The Old Well


Employees of the Barker and Shay Cattle Company dug this well around 1900 to provide water for human consumption. At one time the well was 16 feet deep and held 600 gallons. This was the only water for miles around, so for years miners and homesteaders hauled all the water they could carry in barrels loaded on horse drawn wagons.
