Common Plants of the Oasis


Arrowweed (Pluchea sericea), seen here in the dense thickets, bears beautiful lavender flowers in the late spring. The Serrano Indians made arrow shafts by cutting and peeling the arrowhead stem. They worked the stem back and forth in the groove of a heated stone arrow straightener to make a tempered arrow shaft.
