Hamilton (1833-1914) was a prospector, inventor, and businessman whose gold discoveries contributed to the development of the Rosamond area and Willow Springs in the Antelope Valley.

Hamilton served for two years in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he worked in farming and carpentry and patented a peat-pressing machine. He later operated a pottery business in Los Angeles, manufacturing clay pipes, tile, bricks, and other products.

Hamilton purchased a clay property in the hills west of Rosamond. During the 1890s, he prospected the area and discovered gold, leading to the development of the Lida Mine. The discovery brought miners and investment to the area. Hamilton’s claims later became part of the mining district associated with the Tropico Mine.

Around 1900, Hamilton used proceeds from his mining ventures to purchase Willow Springs and approximately 160 acres from the Beale estate. The springs had long served travelers as a watering place and stage station. Hamilton developed the property into a farm and health resort, building stone houses, a hotel, and other facilities. The community also had a school, public hall, and shops.

Hamilton died in 1914. His legacy remains connected to the mining history of Tropico Hill and the stone buildings at Willow Springs.

References

Borge, Alyssa. “Ezra Hamilton.” Lancaster Museum of Art and History, November 30, 2017. lancastermoah.org

Lancaster Museum of Art and History. “The History of Willow Springs.” lancastermoah.org

Kern Antelope Historical Society. “Hamilton’s Own Story of His Rich Gold Strike West of Rosamond in the 1890s.” Antelope Horn, May 2019. kahs1959.org

Vredenburgh, Larry M. “The Mojave Mining District: A Brief History of Gold Mining.” vredenburgh.org

Desert Fever: An Overview of Mining History of the California Desert. “Tropico Hill.” mojavedesert.net

Ezra M.
