Prospectors flood in, and Bodie transforms from a quiet camp into a booming town \u2014 and with it comes gambling, saloons, opium dens, and gunslingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1879 \u2013 Peak Population, Peak Violence<\/strong><br>Bodie hits its peak with around 7,000\u201310,000 residents. That year alone, it\u2019s said there were&nbsp;<strong>30+ murders<\/strong>, many tied to gambling disputes and drunken shootouts. The phrase&nbsp;<em>\u201cBad Man from Bodie\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;enters widespread use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1879 \u2013 Tom Treanor Kills a Man in a Saloon<\/strong><br>After a heated argument during a card game, Treanor guns down another miner in a crowded bar. He was arrested but later released after a murky trial. Two men are killed, and several bystanders are wounded. This kind of event is common enough that locals don\u2019t even bother locking their doors \u2014 they\u2019re used to chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1881 \u2013 James Stuart Lynched by a Mob<\/strong><br>Caught robbing a stagecoach, Stuart is jailed in Bodie. That night, a group of vigilantes breaks in and&nbsp;<strong>hangs him from a telegraph pole<\/strong>. His body dangled for hours \u2014 a message to other would-be criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1882 \u2013 Red Irwin Walks Free After Killing a Man<\/strong><br>\u201cRed\u201d Irwin shoots another gambler in the back during a dispute. Witnesses testify, but the case is dismissed on a technicality. His murder is never solved. By this point, even lawmen hesitate to enforce order in Bodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1884 \u2013 Town Begins to Decline<\/strong><br>Mines starts to dry up. Many \u201cbad men\u201d drift elsewhere.
