{"id":7685,"date":"2024-04-13T19:13:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-13T19:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/?p=7685"},"modified":"2024-04-13T20:06:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T20:06:25","slug":"wrightwoods-heath-creek-snow-shoe-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wrightwoods-heath-creek-snow-shoe-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Wrightwood\u2019s Heath Creek \u2013 Snow Shoe it!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yesterday, I headed up Heath Creek and got a quick snowshoe in to the upper gate. &nbsp;Only went about a mile up from Thrush Rd. &nbsp;However, it\u2019s about 460\u2032 of gain. &nbsp;It\u2019s been so long since we\u2019ve had this kind of snow. &nbsp;Forgot how much of a chug it would be with snowshoes on \u2013 ha! &nbsp; Good times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_898\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canyoncartography.com\/?attachment_id=898\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/canyoncartography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Wrightwood-Big-Pines-Trails-e1549242783256.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-898\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Here\u2019s a small section of the Wrightwood \u2013 Big Pines map depicting part of Heath Creek. Access this hike by taking the dirt road that departs south, climbing upslope from Thrush Rd. between Victorville Street and Heath Creek Rd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elevation Gain \/ Loss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the lower gate (just above Thrush Rd.) to upper gate = 460\u2032. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The elevation on Thrush Rd. at spot where you walk up the beginning of levee road is 5,840\u2032. &nbsp; This gain takes place in approximately one mile along the levee road located on west side of Heath Creek. &nbsp; Elevation of upper gate is 6,300\u2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have time, keep on going past the upper gate. &nbsp;Soon you\u2019ll encounter some sawn log benches placed in a square configuration. &nbsp; Keep going further up along the stream bed on the old, steeply rutted jeep road which is in places barely a trace. &nbsp;It\u2019s steeper going now than it was on the levee road between the two gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From upper gate to top end of old jeep road (abandoned) &nbsp; &nbsp;=400\u2032. &nbsp;The top end of old road is where two canyons come together. There\u2019s a forested canyon on the left side and small stream running between jagged walls on the right. &nbsp;The elevation here is 6,700\u2032. &nbsp; &nbsp; Look for the little framework of limbs that have been lashed to some upright hand-hewn cedar poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_917\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canyoncartography.com\/2019\/02\/07\/wrightwood-heath-creek-snowshoe\/wright-slide\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/canyoncartography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Wright-Slide-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-917\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Looking directly up Wright Mountain\u2019s slide from the canyon bottom.
