Here&#8217;s a brief overview of the history of Route 66 through the Cajon Pass:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Early Years:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The area around Cajon Pass has been a natural corridor for travel for centuries, used by <a href=\"https:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/mojave-desert-indians\/\">Native American tribes<\/a> and early <a href=\"https:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/people\/spanish-explorers.html\">Spanish explorers<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 19th century, as the United States expanded westward, various trails and wagon routes traversed <a href=\"\/cajon-pass\/\">Cajon Pass<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Railroad Era:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/railroads\/california-southern\/\">railroad<\/a> in the late 19th century significantly impacted transportation through the Pass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The railroad became a major mode of transportation, rendering the pass a vital link in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/railroads\/santa-fe-railroad\/\">national rail network<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Route 66 and the Automobile Era:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1926, <a href=\"\/route-66\/\">Route 66<\/a> was established, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. This iconic highway symbolized westward migration, economic development, and the American love for the open road.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Route 66 passed through Cajon Pass, providing a direct route for motorists traveling between the Midwest and the West Coast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Development and Upgrades:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the years, various improvements and realignments were made to Route 66 through Cajon Pass to accommodate the growing volume of traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The pass saw upgrades in terms of road infrastructure and engineering, making the journey more efficient for travelers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decline and Bypassing:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As the interstate highway system was developed, newer and more efficient roads bypassed sections of Route 66, contributing to the eventual decline of the historic route.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 1960s, portions of Route 66 through Cajon Pass were bypassed by <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/road-trail\/interstate-15.html\">Interstate 15<\/a>, which became the primary route for modern transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recognition and Preservation:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the late 20th century, interest was resurgent in preserving and commemorating Route 66&#8217;s history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today, portions of the historic route, including those through Cajon Pass, are designated as historic byways, attracting tourists interested in
