{"id":3435,"date":"2023-11-25T15:40:26","date_gmt":"2023-11-25T15:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/?p=3435"},"modified":"2023-11-25T15:53:31","modified_gmt":"2023-11-25T15:53:31","slug":"tulare-lake-vanished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/tulare-lake-vanished\/","title":{"rendered":"Tulare Lake \u2013 Vanished"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many folks interested in Mojave Desert history are aware that in 1776,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/garces\/mojave-crossing-journal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Francisco Tom\u00e1s Hermenegildo Garc\u00e9s<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;was the first non-native American to cross the Mojave from the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/mojave-indians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mojave Indian<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;villages near&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/digital-desert.com\/needles-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Needles<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/digital-desert.com\/colorado-river\/lower-river.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colorado River<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/digital-desert.com\/san-gabriel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mission San Gabriel<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;near Los Angeles, California.&nbsp; Trapper and explorer&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/historical-figures\/jedediah-smith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jedediah Smith<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;also crossed the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/jedediahsmith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mojave in 1826 and in 1827<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/desertgazette.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"858\" src=\"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3437\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11.jpg 862w, https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/digital-desert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/862-lake-tulare-map-overlay-1874-11-768x764.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3598\">Tulare Lake \u2013 1874<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not so well known is that when they left the mission at San Gabriel, both men made their way north to the San Joaquin Valley and the shore of Tulare Lake.&nbsp;&nbsp; In tracking the paths of both men concerning our modern geography, it is soon discovered that this lake does not seem to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happened to Tulare Lake?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to this mystery of a disappearing lake is simple yet inelegant and predictable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>At the onset of American settlement in the area in the late 1840s, the lake was the largest body of fresh water west of the Great Lakes.
