He was an eccentric old gentleman. He had a wife aged twenty or twenty-two\u2014his third or fourth. In 1846 I visited him. After cordially welcoming me, he introduced me to his wife, and in the same breath, and as I shook hands with her, said, in a joking way, with a cunning smile, \u201c <em>No se enamore de mi joven esposa.<\/em>\u201d (Don&#8217;t fall in love with my young wife.) He had numbers of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Los Angeles was largely populated from his family.
