New Mexico - Route 66 Map

GRANTS, 78.3 m. (6,464 alt., 1,541 pop.), is a railroad town and trading center for a large agricultural and ranching territory. Its history begins in 1872 when Don Jesús Blea settled here and called his home under the cottonwoods Alamitos (little cottonwoods). In 1873 came Don Ramón Baca with his family. When the Santa Fe Railway reached this point in 1881, Alamitos became a coaling station and was renamed for the Grant brothers who constructed the railroad.
